The Nugget Couch In-Depth Review – Is it Worth it?
The Nugget Couch serves its purpose for both kids and adults, making it dual-purpose and worth it in my opinion! It’s great for playtime and is sure to keep the kids entertained. Maybe you have heard of the Nugget couch after it went viral during quarantine, maybe you haven’t, or maybe you yourself have been influenced and love this multipurpose couch. When it isn’t being used for play, it can be easily put back together for relaxing.
If you haven’t heard about the Nugget Couch before, it’s a modular sofa designed for kids to play. It was created to appear subtle in a room when it isn’t being used for play. It’s comfortable enough to be used as furniture and is offered in a variety of fabric covers that are easy to clean and replace.
There is also a whole world of the Nugget couch alternatives, like this Amazon version that’s $50 off the real thing.
My twin sister purchased the Nugget Couch for her kids a few years ago and so I figured it was time to do an in-depth review and get her overall thoughts to see if it’s worth the hype.
I asked her a bunch of questions about the Nugget to get the nitty gritty and she had a bunch of great points that is hopefully helpful as you consider purchasing your own Nugget couch.
TLDR: She loves it and says it’s totally worth it!
Her boys are 4 years old and 9 months old and the Nugget couch sits in their playroom.
Take it away, Audrey!
What comes with the Nugget?
It comes in four pieces and is super convenient because everything is rolled together tightly for quick and easy delivery. It comes with two pillows, a thin cushion, and a thick base. It retails for $249 plus tax and shipping.
Every Nugget Couch comes with the fabric already on it- which is the fabric that you have the option to pick from a variety of colors.
If spills or stains happen, which is likely considering its a kids toy, you can easily take the cover off and wash it or buy a back up fabric cover.
What is so special about the Nugget?
I learned about the Nugget from a coworker and she raved about how fun it was for her toddler! She also mentioned how multipurpose it was, and that they would bring it to grandparents’ house when her daughter would be staying the night. Toddlers love climbing and I didn’t have anything indoors for climbing so I wanted to see what the hype was about.
Nugget Pros
In my option, the pros of the Nugget Couch far outweigh the cons!
- The cover is removable and washable
- It’s very multipurpose- couch, chair, bed + countless combinations for kid fun
- Sooo many fun combinations to build (there are tons of video ideas on TikTok)
- Appealing to a big range of kids ages
- It’s fairly affordable
- If you later change your decor, you can buy covers separately and switch it up. Having another cover on hand may even be useful for when one is in the wash!
Nugget Cons
Like any product that quickly gains popularity, this couch is a little hard to get your hands on!
- It used to take forever to receive after ordering. I think I waited 3-4 months! But now they have their production down, but colors may sell out quickly.
- While one is absolutely functional and fun, to build bigger forts and combinations it’s best to have more than one.
- While it is comfortable and can be used as a “couch,” I wouldn’t fully replace adult furniture with it as it is low to the ground and would be difficult for Grandparents to get up from when used as a couch.
What age is the Nugget couch for?
Depends how you want to use it! It absolutely works for a one year old up to pre-teen or even beyond. It’s the perfect item for a pre-teen or teenager to have in their room in place of an expensive couch.
As my son has gotten into older toddler age, he plays with it at least 3 days a week I’d say. Most often he uses it as a car ramp, a boat, and a cage. The complex setups require help from an adult (and really the idea has to originate from an adult) so regular play usually doesn’t involve complex setups! As a younger toddler, that was the biggest thing I noticed – he really didn’t play with it on his own because the pieces were too heavy and everything had to be set up by an adult.
Is the Nugget comfortable?
Yes! Very comfortable! The nugget has a base cushion and a top cushion – the top cushion is the softer, squisher piece.
For being primarily made for play, it is a very comfortable couch even for adults to lounge on!
Can adults fit on a Nugget couch?
Definitely! But as mentioned above in the cons, I wouldn’t fully replace adult furniture with it. But it can be folded and stacked to create a higher chair if you choose to do that.
Although it serves it’s purpose as a couch, the couch doesn’t necessarily look like your average piece of furniture. This is why it looks great in a playroom or a finished basement that isn’t used as much as a main living area.
Is the Nugget couch worth the price?
I think the Nugget Couch is fairly affordable considering the lifespan it has. We’ve used it as a bed for kid guests before and I think it is worth it just for that purpose alone! We use it for playtime fun all the time, not to mention as a place to sit in the playroom since we don’t have other furniture in the room.
How do you clean the Nugget?
The cover zips off and can be washed. It also spot cleans well. I think I’ve washed it one time in the 3 years we’ve had it. I usually just spot clean or vacuum if needed. It was made to be easy to wash and comes with instructions for easy cleaning if you’re concerned about it getting messy.
Is it a hassle to remove covers and put them back on?
The pieces are pretty basic shapes, and there is no “assembly” so it’s not too much of a hassle to remove covers and throw in the wash. The hardest part is making sure the zippers and seams are straight on the cushion!
How durable is the Nugget?
We’ve had no issues with the Nuggets losing shape or falling apart. The cover is very thick, too. Kids jump on it all the time and have no issues with sinking or breaking down at all!
Tips on ordering the Nugget and fabric type
I chose the koala gray color because the playroom already had lots of color in it, but you can order covers separately so I didn’t stress too much about the color! They have a few different fabric types now, but the koala fabric I have feels almost like a suede.
Here are fabric options:
- Microsuede
- Double brushed microsuede
- Corduroy
There are 3 colors that are here to stay for the Nugget Couch that aren’t special edition:
- Blueridge (navy)
- Koala (gray)
- Harbor (dark gray)
Aside from the 3 permanent colors that you can get in the Nugget Couch, there are a variety of about 20 seasonal colors and patterns that are available on rotating schedules as well. You can buy covers for your couch as you need, so it’s fun to keep an eye on the new color releases!
How did the Nugget arrive and how long did it take to fluff up?
It arrives in a large (car seat sized) iconic orange box! They have special equipment that rolls the pieces up to fit in a box. They recommend opening it up right away to let it start expanding. It expands rather quickly, too! I don’t remember exactly how long it took but I think the same day it was fully expanded.
There are a few alternatives to the Nugget
This Nugget couch dupe from Kohls is priced at $199 ($50 bucks off from the original Nugget) but can usually be found on sale! It’s a great alternative for a lower cost with good reviews.
Foamnasium Blocksy – This dupe is nearly identical to the actual Nugget couch and isn’t priced any cheaper. Sometimes a select color may be on sale. It’s a great option if the Nugget is sold out and you don’t want to wait weeks for it to ship.
Foamnasium Blocky is also sold at Pottery Barn Kids in really sweet pastel colors and in more fun shapes and sizes!
The Millard Couch from Amazon is an amazing dupe and is the cheapest option plus you get free Prime shipping! Over 700 reviews with 4.5 stars makes it a great alternative.
All of these alternatives were created for the same reason as the Nugget and are great options! I’ve also heard that Costco and IKEA have similar versions as well.
The Foamnasium Blocksy is probably the biggest competitor to the Nugget and is usually just as quick to sell out.
Do Nuggets ever go on sale or have coupons?
Unfortunately, no. With the crazy high demand, they can’t keep it in stock for long and even take pre-sales. It’s extremely hard to get your hands on a Nugget because they can be sold out at any given time.
You might consider looking on Facebook marketplace for gently used Nuggets if they’re all sold out online.
That about sums up everything there is to know about the Nugget Couch! Sometimes it’s nice to read honest, more in-depth reviews from a mom that has used the Nugget for her toddler instead of relying solely on the website for brief reviews.
I think if you are looking for a versatile play and lounge option for your playroom the Nugget is a great option! It keeps the kiddos entertained and is easy to clean, transport, and put back together after a long day of play!
